Samsung unveiled its latest flagship smartphone — the Galaxy Note 7 — at its Unpacked 2016 event. The smartphone was launched with other devices but the Galaxy Note 7 was clearly the most intriguing.
- Layers of protection
The smartphone is the first to feature Gorilla Glass 5 protection which can survive a 5.2-foot (1.6-meter) drop. The glass is also “4X better in drop failure height than competitive glasses,” said Corning on its official website. The device is also IP68 water and dust resistant which means that the device can be submerged in 5-feet of water for up to 30 minutes. - Iris scanner
This is the first smartphone from Samsung to integrate Iris scanner technology which can be used to unlock the smartphone, or even a lock a specific folder. - IP68 rating
Like the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge, the Galaxy Note 7 is water-resistant. That means you can jump in a pool or leave it in about 5 feet of water for up to 30 minutes. It should survive just fine, and the submersion won’t damage the S Pen at all, either, which is pretty fantastic. In fact, during an early hands-on with the Galaxy Note 7, I found that it’s extremely easy to write on the display under water. Neat! - The S Pen
The S Pen come with the same IP68 certification as the Galaxy Note 7 can be used under water. Samsung also claims that users can even write while standing in a storm. The S Pen is 108-mm long and has a 0.7-mm tip, which is smaller and more accurate than its predecessor on the Galaxy Note 5 by 2.6mm and 0.9mm, respectively. The S Pen also comes with unique commands which let you do things like magnifying the screen and record a GIFs from videos. - Galaxy Note 7 has similar specifications to the Galaxy S7
Like the Galaxy S7, Samsung is pushing two different processors in the Galaxy Note 7. A US version will feature a Snapdragon 820 process while the rest of the world will get the Exynos chipset. Other key features include a 5.7-inch quad HD (2560×1440) curved AMOLED display, 4GB RAM, 64GB of inbuilt storage (expandable up to 256GB), 12MP rear camera, 5MP front camera and a 3500mAh battery with support for wireless fast charging. - GIF maker!
I know, I know, a GIF maker might sound pretty dumb, but this function is actually really awesome. Samsung added a new on-screen recording capability that lets you create a GIF out of anything that isn’t protected. Maybe you want to grab something funny from a YouTube video, for example. Just highlight the area, hit play, hit record and, boom, moments later you have an editable and shareable GIF. - Expandable storage
Samsung may have upset a few potential customers last year by removing the expandable storage and removable battery that were beloved by Galaxy Note’s fanbase. Have no fear, though. Expandable storage is back this year, and Samsung is boosting the onboard storage of the entry-level model up to 64GB, so there’s plenty to get you started. I don’t believe it fully supports Adoptable Storage, which lets you use the microSD card and your onboard drive as one space, which is a bit of a bummer, however.
Those are just a few of the new features out of dozens added to the Galaxy Note 7. Samsung included a new night mode that removes blue light from the screen as you get sleepy, support for Mobile HDR streaming and much more.
